On behalf of myself and your fans around the world, happy birthday! We hope you have an absolutely amazing day, you deserve it.
Hello Malese, the New year has been a rocket jump for you! What have you been up to?
Hey! Just been settling into the new year! People are now finally getting to see what I had been filming before the holidays so it’s very exciting!
How did you first get involved with “The Flash”?
I had been super busy with auditions right before the holidays, and the Flash was one that was thrown into the mix. I was actually running late to my initial producers session, and was the last girl to show up. I’m usually Miss Punctuality so I was in a panic about it! I came running down the hall and straight into the room with all of the mastermind guys behind the show. Thankfully they helped me through my windedness and adrenaline and got a solid read out of me. Before I left the room, Andrew said “Watch, these are the kinds of auditions people book.” I left thinking, “I sure hope so!” The rest is history.
You play Linda Park, Barry’s love interest on The Flash. Were you ever a fan of the comic books before this?
I’m ashamed to admit that I was never huge into comic books growing up, but you can imagine the weight that I felt when I started extensively googling the character and realizing how iconic she is. It’s an absolute honor to bring her to life. I’m now the biggest fan of the comic book world. It’s like a dream come true.
Have you experienced your very own superhero-like fandom yet?
I’ve been blessed to be a part of a few different fandoms throughout my career. It’s amazing to see such passion, and actually how all of them are different in their own way. Coming on board with The Flash, I received the best welcome from the “speedsters.” Can’t wait to see their reactions and opinions after these new episodes of the show!
50 high quality screen captures of Malese as Linda Park from Tuesday’s episode of The Flash have been added into the gallery.
Things may not have worked the way he wanted with Iris (Candice Patton), but in tonight’s (February 3) episode of “The Flash,” Barry (Grant Gustin) gets swept off his feet by a young Central City Picture News reporter named Linda Park (Malese Jow) — and she’s making the first move.
“It’s kind of like opposites attract,” Jow told MTV News over the phone. “Which makes it fun to watch.” Their meet-cute location? A dive karaoke bar. Yes, “Flash” fans, prepare to watch Barry — and one very drunk Caitlin — loosen up with a hilarious round of karaoke. According to Jow, Linda and Barry’s connection is “instantaneous.” For more scoop on Barry and Linda’s romance, including Iris’ reaction and the possibility of a man named Wally West showing up anytime soon, read the rest of our interview with Jow below.
MTV News: Linda is going to shake a lot of things up for Iris at the Central City Picture News. Is there going to be tension between them?
Malese Jow: There definitely is something between them when they fist meet. They meet at the end of tomorrow night’s episode, and they meet at Picture News. It’s a weird dynamic. Iris is a strong woman, but Linda is not only strong, but she’s also secure and confident, and she’s a veteran at the paper. And now she’s the new object of Barry’s affections, so there’s already a little bit of tension there between Linda and Iris.
MTV: Is there a possibility that it will turn into a friendship down the road? I’d love to see them work together.
Jow: I personally want that! Hopefully, at some point they can be friends, but it might take a while to get to that point. They have a respect for each other, but there’s also that competitive edge there. I’d like to see them become friends. That would be really nice.
MTV: Iris certainly has a strong source in The Flash. What does Linda think about him?
Jow: Linda doesn’t have too much of an opinion about it. She doesn’t get to see into the whole Flash aspect of things. She’s very much a part of Barry’s life, especially his love life, so she doesn’t really get involved with The Flash.
Things might not have worked out the way he wanted with Iris West (for now), but love is on the horizon for Barry Allen in “The Flash.” On Tuesday, Barry (Grant Gustin) is about to head out on the town, where he will catch the eye of a lovely young Central City Picture News sports reporter by the name of Linda Park, played by Malese Jow. “They meet at a dive karaoke bar of all places,” guest star Malese Jow told Access Hollywood. “Barry had just sang a little karaoke, he’s taken care of a drunken Caitlin and then Linda bellies up to the bar and immediately they kind of have this spark and Linda wastes no time giving him her phone number and it’s kind of – the rest is history.”
And who wouldn’t swoon over Barry Allen doing karaoke, with Grant’s musical theater (and “Glee” graduate) chops. “Grant is just a superstar. I can’t say enough good things about him. He can do it all. I’m not even kidding. He’s one of the most professional, talented people I’ve ever worked with, so one of my first days, sitting there and watching him sing too? I was like, ‘Are you kidding me?!? You’re literally not human!’ It’s just crazy,” Malese said of watching Grant work and belt out a tune. Although she couldn’t reveal Barry’s karaoke tune, Malese said Linda finds Barry “adorable,” and the two actually will head out on a date in Central City before the episode is over. “Barry gets to kind of live a normal twenty-something-year-old life. Instead of saving the world, he gets to actually take a girl out and have a little adventure and paint the town red,” she said. “It’s good because I feel like Linda brings out of him – he kind of steps up to the plate because he knows how she is and they end up having a really good time.”
And one promo clip showed them in what looked to be a horizontal make-out session on the couch. “She knows what she wants,” Malese laughed, when Access asked about the sneak peek scene. But, could things get a little frosty now that Barry’s living with surrogate dad Joe West (Jesse L. Martin), who could presumably come home at any time?
“It’s funny how one of our scenes plays out and it’ll totally answer your question,” Malese said. “But yeah, Linda doesn’t take that too seriously. They keep it light and fun and spontaneous.”
Tuesday’s episode will also find Linda interacting with her fresh Central City Picture News co-worker, Iris West (Candice Patton). “Linda’s a veteran at Picture News, so she kind of has what Iris wants, so there’s not really a jealousy or a competition, but there’s definitely something in the air of like, ‘Hmm…,’ like feeling each other out, because they’re two very strong women and now that Barry’s in the mix, it makes it even more complicated,” Malese said.
And the complications will continue in the coming weeks with a possible double date with Barry and Linda, and Iris (who has yet to address Barry’s Christmas love confession) and her boyfriend Eddie.
“In one of my future episodes actually, Eddie is involved in the whole mix of Iris, Barry and Linda. So that’ll be very fun for people to watch,” she said.
“It’s funny, Linda and Eddie immediately find common ground a little bit, just because the tables have turned with Linda coming on to the scene and now, Barry’s kind of wrapped up in her and Iris is like, ‘What? I thought you loved me, but I don’t want you to love me,'” Linda previewed. “It’s very confusing and things are constantly shifting with the love triangle dynamic, so I think when Linda and Eddie interact, it’s kind of like they have to kind of swallow the fact that there’s a lot of history between Barry and Iris ’cause that’s not something that you can just make go away overnight.”
